PSHE Resource of the Week 2026 - Relationships between alcohol, drugs and mental health
Share
Why this PSHE / RSHE resource?
There are some really interesting new things to consider in the DFE's new 2026 RSHE guidance and this was a topic which I found a really interesting addition as it gets pupils to not only think about mental health but the potential unhealthy coping strategies we might use to deal with it. Similarly it gets pupils to think about some of the reasons we might be tempted to use drugs and alcohol and how these might not always be positive but also how there might be the need to be compassionate and provide support for people who do use them to avoid dealing with trauma.
What does this PSHE lesson on the bidirectional relationship between alcohol, drugs and mental health cover exactly?
- How we might feel pulled to do things we know are not good for us.
- The loop between why people use drugs and alcohol to manage mental health and the impact they have on mental health.
- Why it is people get stuck in this loop.
- What treatment might need to look like.
